In 1816, the Bank of the United States was rechartered, the first charter having expired in 1811, in an attempt to stabilize the national currency. Within the first three years, the bank was nearly ruined due to mismanagement. Langdon Cheves was elected president of its board of directors in 1819 and restored the bank's credit. James Monroe, fifth president of the United States of America (b. April 28, 1758, Monroe Hall, Virginia-d.
